MLA Teresa Wat’s statement on Multiculturalism Day
RICHMOND (June 27, 2020) — Teresa Wat, MLA for Richmond North Center and Opposition Critic for Multiculturalism, released the following statement today in honour of Multiculturalism Day:
“Today provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our province as we recognize how diverse backgrounds enrich our society. British Columbians across the province can applaud the contributions made by multicultural communities that have made life in B.C. more inclusive and vibrant for every one of us.
“I know we are all proud to call ourselves British Columbians and it makes me proud to know that B.C. welcomes and attracts newcomers from around the world more than any other province in the country. Almost thirty per cent of British Columbians have immigrated here from other countries.
“While we are not immune to acts of intolerance and discrimination we have seen recently and we must all rise together to condemn these acts. Acceptance and cooperation between the many people that call this province home is what defines us as a province.
“On this day, let's all take a moment to appreciate the diversity that makes our province strong, and work to build greater cultural awareness in our own home, communities, and workplaces. We each have a responsibility to be part of the solution.
“Every British Columbian deserves to be treated with respect and dignity and we should strive to be compassionate and understanding to everyone we encounter in our lives.”
